Moddejonge’s Herbals:  Hewitt’s Herbal Apothecary With a Magical Twist

Yearning to pick up a handy new skill while you’re staying at home? The “Wisdom From Gran” series may be the perfect place to start. You can catch Lynn Moddejonge, owner of Moddejonge’s Herbals, live on Facebook on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7 p.m. to share her endless DIY homesteading knowledge. It all started with a sourdough starter tutorial. Then we found ourselves taking tours of her yard, making a homemade salve, laundry soap, apple cider vinegar, mayonnaise, you name it!  It’s a great way to connect until in-person classes resume. You can also virtually attend Full Moon and New Moon rituals at 6:00 pm on those days. Check out Facebook to stay connected.

Long before the days of social distancing, I sat down with Lynn at her cozy shop and learned a bit of her backstory. A natural interest in herbal medicine led to exponential business that eventually landed her at the current spot on Hewitt (across from the arena). It all began in her basement, where she crafted ointments and other herbal concoctions for her family. As word got out about their healing properties, demand for her products grew, and she branched out to sell them at street fairs and farmers’ markets. Things took off from there, the shop opened in 2012.

Jars of herbs and spices line the floor-to-ceiling shelves -  there are so many that Lynn uses a wooden ladder to reach them. Customers are enthusiastically and patiently helped one by one as they come seeking remedies or advice. Lynn’s herbal expertise is invaluable, and I joke that we get a free consultation when we visit the shop, but that’s not far from the truth.

Whether it’s a relief from the common cold or something more spiritual in nature, Moddejonge’s is a place for people to find the tools they need to improve their lives. It’s more than just a store - it’s a safe space for community members and a welcoming haven for all.

“We try to be, as much as we can, all things to all people, without losing our integrity.”

Among the decorated shelves and altars you will find unique healing stones, locally crafted wands, and sparkly jewelry. It’s a great place to shop for one of a kind gift.  I hear that the incense has somewhat of a cult following: it’s hand-dipped with high-quality non-toxic ingredients. Another favorite is the herbal emergency kit complete with dried herbs and a reference guide in case of disaster or emergency. A class series on that topic is in the works when business resumes as normal. Until then, tune into the Wisdom From Gran series, and if you need some herbs or supplies, reach out to Lynn for direct shipment.
