Flying Squirrel: Fun for Young and Old

Editor’s Note: Originally published February 16, 2022.

Flying Squirrel is officially open with their indoor fun center in the old Toys R Us building. They first opened last summer with a temporary outdoor setup, but they now have loads more to offer.

Some friends recently joined my daughter and me to go check things out. My first impression walking into the new space was almost overwhelming. There is so much going on in every direction, including multiple tall funky and colorful climbing structures (which took me a minute to realize what they were).

After checking in and sliding on our jump socks, our first stop was the trampolines. I was happy to see the pink custom 4,000 square foot bouncy castle that had been outside over the summer is now inside the new location (as is, of course, the mechanical “bucking squirrel!”). The bouncy castle is quite fun with an obstacle course, slides, and more.

There are multiple other trampoline areas which include extra springy Olympic style trampolines (for older kids), tetherball (while standing on trampolines!), basketball, a jump pad, and loads more trampolines of various sizes and angles.

If jumping isn’t your thing you’ve got plenty of other options. Grab a friend and spar on the balance beam, hit the slackline, or explore one of the many climbing areas.

There’s also an arcade where you can rack up points to score fun prizes and multiple pool tables. Perhaps the most unique feature, a high-tech putt-putt golf course with a new set of rules. Owner, Patrick Horenstein, shared it is only the 3rd installation of this course that has been done in the world. The impression I got from Patrick was that you scan your club and not only does it keep score for you, but you can even get extra points by hitting certain targets along the way. The course wasn’t quite 100% ready yet while we were there, but I’m definitely looking forward to trying it out.

After having so much fun you’ll probably be ready for some food and drink, and thankfully Flying Squirrel has plenty of both. We enjoyed a tasty giant pretzel with cheese dip from the food counter, which also has pizza, chips, juice and more. There are adult beverages as well including wine, cider, and beer (including my favorite beer: Irish Death).

For even more adult beverages you’ll find ‘The Drey Bar’ right around the corner with a full bar of cocktails. There’s plenty of seating including extra areas for parties and larger groups. And did I mention that everything glows Friday and Saturday nights? Say what?!

No matter how old you are, Flying Squirrel is sure to put a smile on your face. Scramble on in,  and let the fun begin!
