What's the Story: Lazy Boy Brewing Turns 10
Lazy Boy Brewing is turning ten this weekend so we thought we'd get behind the scenes and find out what's up with this Everett classic.
Thanks to Shawn Loring, founder and owner of Lazy Boy, for answering our Q's.
Why did you open a brewery in Everett before it was cool?
We felt Everett was a location with tremendous opportunity (still do) for the following reasons:
It was at the time an under-served community for taprooms.
It has great access to the I-5 corridor.
There was less traffic congestion at the time.
You could see North Sound was going to explode with growth.
What have you seen change in Everett (and Everett’s beer scene) in the last decade?
Everett, like the national trend, is changing for a more local flavor. The community seems to want to shed the comparison to Seattle and become a top flight city on its own.
What’s your favorite beer style?
Undoubtedly IPA'S...love those hops.
Do you have a favorite Everett-brewed beer?
Favorite Everett beer is Scuttlebutt Barley wine.
How has your beer changed over the last 10 years?
We have changed several of the core brands along our journey. Most notably our flagship IPA to a more hop forward west coast style. I was reluctant at first, but it was the right choice. We also brew a new beer each month to keep things fresh for ourselves and our customers.
If you were stranded on Jetty Island, which Lazy Boy beer would you bring?
That's a pretty tough one, because I do love IPA'S. However, I would bring our Oatmeal Stout- good sunset beer.
What fictional character would you like to grab a beer with?
That's a easy one...Yoda, I mean it's Yoda!
Your fresh hop was the bomb. Tell us a little about your process in brewing it.
The process for us is fun and longer [than usual], because we clean the mash tun out after the sparge, and then bring the very hot wort back through. It essentially creates a large hop back (smells amazing when we do this).
What’s next for Lazy boy?
New for us in 2017 is we will continue to push ourselves by brewing something new each month, build a small barrel program, renovate and improve our taproom for the next 10 years, and hopefully make some friends along the way.
To celebrate their decade of brewing, Lazy Boy is throwing a shindig this Saturday from 2 PM to 10 PM at their place featuring new beers, Papa's Pizza food truck, a magician (for reals) from 4:00 to 6:00, and live music. Hop on over to wish 'em another ten years of Brewing in Everett.
