CafeWorks Turns One
If you are anything like me, you go to bed dreaming about the coffee you get to drink when you wake up. I often plan my day around the café I want to visit that day. One of my favorites in Everett is CafeWorks.
Head down Broadway and you will find a cozy little café attached to a furniture store. Remember that mission-minded coffee shop voted third in the EVVY Awards for Best Coffee Shop? Yeah, that’s them.
Walking into CafeWorks, you will be welcomed by the tantalizing aroma of java, a friendly staff, and the promise of a day started the right way. But if you dig a little deeper, you will also discover that this neighborhood joint has more than just a great environment and winning coffee to offer.
CafeWorks is the latest social enterprise started by HopeWorks Social Enterprises. HopeWorks, an affiliate of Housing Hope, is a non-profit that owns and operates businesses specifically created with the purpose of training and employing people from disadvantaged backgrounds so that they can gain job skills and earn a living wage.
More specifically, CafeWorks operates with the purpose of directing homeless and other at-risk youth towards sustainable career pathways. The café partners with local organization Cocoon House in order to reach these populations. In its first year, CafeWorks has been incredibly successful in its mission, seeing all of its interns graduate the program and every one of those graduates finding a job after leaving the program.
Anyone who walks into the shop can feel that this place is special. The interns learn under the guidance of a skilled and also fun-loving staff, and the love that each employee has for the work they are doing is tangible from the moment you walk in the door.
You know that feeling you get when you open up a card (handwritten in the chicken scratch of your good ol’ friend, of course) and it is just the right kind of funny that it makes you laugh, but it also has the genuine sentiments that make you remember why you’re friends? Experiencing CafeWorks is a lot like that, but probably a lot better because you don’t have to sit at your mailbox waiting for a card.
The café has seen much success in its short life, which is only the beginning for this emerging Everett community staple. They are excited to celebrate one year of serving up your favorite beverages and treats.
Coming up on Monday, January 9th from 11 AM to 1 PM, they will be hosting a celebration event. You can expect raffles, giveaways, birthday-themed specials, a celebration of the café’s accomplishments, and birthday party vibes all day long. We could all use a little birthday pizazz injected into our Mondays, so be sure to stop by, drink some coffee (or tea), and get yo' birthday on.

Emma works for the non-profit HopeWorks Station here in Everett. HopeWorks supports three social enterprises: a cafe, a gently used and up-cycled furniture store, and a landscaping business. They are all about creating purposeful businesses that help break the cycle of poverty and provide community-wide impact.
