In March of 1945 the U.S Joint Chiefs of Staff began planning for the invasion of mainland Japan, this operation was code named "Downfall" and would begin with the largest amphibious assault in history - Operation "Olympic.” With a landing Force five times larger than D-day, Olympic would have been on a scale of unimaginable size.
