Good Eats: Cafe Wylde
Cafe Wylde opened their doors a few months back in April 2016. Located in a lovely building directly across the street from the Schack Art Center, they have managed to bundle together effortless style while subtly highlighting the charming ornateness of the building.
Before Cafe Wylde, they were the Ringing Cedar Tea Tavern in Lake Stevens. The Tea Tavern had a more limited food menu, but still featured their delicious drinks and desserts. Their plan to expand as a permanent fixture at the new Potala Place was disrupted, and they wound up at their current location through a meant-to-be connection with one of their previous customers.
Long story short: it all worked out and this place is rocking some of the best and most innovative local, organic fare around.
The menu is adventurous at Cafe Wylde. A kind staff member noted that the Bowl and the Bukhan tacos are favorites. The Bowl is filled with cooked quinoa, beans, fresh pea sprouts, cultured ginger carrots, onion, croutons, avocado and seaweed, drizzled with their house-made tahini sauce and sprinkled with sesame seeds.
I ordered the peach habanero jackfruit tacos for $13. I was a bit skeptical about the jackfruit “meat”, but it was delicious! Flaky, tender, even juicy, and seasoned just right. The tacos are topped with a reasonable amount of ingredients: romaine lettuce, onion, radish, and sliced avocado, topped with the fajita-flavored jackfruit, then drizzled with homemade nondairy cashew “sour cream” and a good amount of their homemade peach habanero sauce. They were gorgeous and portioned just right.
The sage mint smoothie was refreshing in a couple of ways: the mint and coconut mix was a new duo for me, and the finish of sweet dates and bitter cacao made it exciting. They offer several different kinds of smoothies, from their Mocha Tea Frappe to the Ruby Lust. If you feel like having something light or trying dessert, they serve raw vegan “cheesecakes” made with nuts and fruit, as well as hot teas, espresso, smoothies, and appetizers like the smokey avocado dip (that I will certainly try next time).
This place is more than just a meal, it’s an experience. Their coconuts are cracked and poured right there from fresh young coconuts, rather than using the usual preserved and less nutritious juices from a can or box. Their focus on local, organic ingredients separates them from the crowd. They are passionate about healthy, nutritious foods, and it shines through in their ingredients and approach to healthy living. They make Hoyt Ave shine brightly and healthily, and do so in good style and taste.
