More Than Just a Donut: Mochinut Everett

Back in September, a new donut shop graced the streets of Everett, but it has taken me this long to finally check it out. Mochinut is “more than just a donut”. In addition to mochi donuts, they offer milk and bubble teas, Vietnamese coffee, and Korean rice flour corn dogs.
A mochi donut is a fusion of Japanese and American-style donuts made with rice flour, which produces a different texture. It originated in Hawaii in the early 1990s. The rice flour produces a donut with very good chew, but is not spongy or dry. Mochi donuts have a signature shape made up of dough balls that are easily separated. I didn’t inquire about the cooking process, but the donuts do not taste deep-fried. They are not greasy and do not taste like lard or shortening. The boyfriend and I were very impressed with the texture and chewiness of the donuts.
We walked in expecting your standard donut shop so we were surprised at the format of the store. User-friendly self-serve kiosks are available at the front counter to place your order, but you can also get assistance from a staff member if kiosks aren’t your thing. The menu is fairly sparse (but not in a bad way) so it's easy to identify what you want, and there is a display of the weekly flavors next to the kiosks to help you make your choices.
The beverages and corn dog flavors are everyday options, but each Monday they post six donut flavors that will be available for the coming week. This week’s flavors were: Pandan, Yuzu Lemon, Strawberry Yakult, Chocolate Funnel Cake, Churro with Caramel, and Maple Bacon. You can also order plain donuts. We got one of each flavor donut and I ordered a traditional milk tea (but I neglected to order the boba and was sad) and the boyfriend ordered a Passion Mango Lemonade which was really refreshing! The lychee jelly at the bottom was a delight to chew on. The lemonade was so pretty when served, layered and vibrant.
We didn’t know about the corn dogs before our visit and had already eaten lunch, but while we were there, there were a lot of corn dogs served - they are very popular! We saw a lot of Flamin’ Hot Cheeto and Blue Heat Takis corn dogs being eaten. Those flavors do not appeal to me however, I do want to go back and try a Crispy Potato All Beef Sausage corn dog and another of their drinks.
Here are a few things to keep in mind for your visit to Mochinut:
When ordering from the kiosks, make a note of your order number, or have the system text you a receipt. The orders tend to stack up and we experienced some confusion with another customer who thought our order was his. I never received the text that the system promised upon order completion, so I think they're still working the bugs out.
There are only six flavors available weekly, not including plain. Check their IG to see what is available that week, unless you’re up for a fun surprise!
Toppings are added to donuts and drinks are mixed to order so be prepared to wait. We waited 20 minutes for two beverages and a dozen donuts.
Since we over-ordered, we had a bunch of leftovers. We noticed that the donuts lost some quality overnight, so order what you plan to eat that same day. If you are ordering for the next day, I suggest covering them with saran wrap or storing them in an airtight container.
The website has not yet been updated with any of the dozen or so Washington locations or their hours. Instagram is the only online presence I can find for the Everett location. If you do not have an Instagram account, you can always call them for details.
