Village Theatre Presents Hairspray

Special thanks to Village Theatre for providing us tickets to opening night in order to write this review.

Let's be honest, going to see a Village Theatre production is always a top-notch experience — especially with its professional cast, vocals, and set design. But sometimes the ticket price can make you second guess your grand night at the theatre.

Is this show really worth $60?

Friends, while I heartily believe every show Village Theatre produces is worth the money, if you had to choose one show to go to this year, choose Hairspray.

It's been a while since I've laughed so hard for so long. The over-the-top antics of Tracy and her faithful sidekick Penny had the whole theatre busting with laughter, especially those wined-up ladies in the back row. (If you're reading this, no harm no foul. You were a delight 😉.)

The humor is a mix of slapstick with a splash of teenage innocence. Spunky characters swooning over boys, standing up to the man, and believing in themselves even though the world demands them to stay quiet. All while singing and dancing.

Oh whoa, that dancing.

Every scene has a dance number full of swing and song, and more than once I found myself subconsciously tapping my foot to the beat. After all, you can't stop the beat.

This production showcases every feature you can possibly imagine for a pro show. Light pyrotechnics, flashy lighting, cross-dressing moms, tap dancing, and more.

However, this show is all about ladies and their spunk, which means it's a great show for the gals, but not completely relatable for your average male. If your man is a theatre nerd, don't miss the show. If not, maybe find a different pal.

My only critique: the cast has some major pipes. They're amazing singers, and I think the sound system helps them a little too much. Bring those mains down a tad and this show is golden.

Sold? Better get those tickets fast, because this show is sure to sell out soon.
