Next Stop at The Boeing Food Court: El Sabor de Chihuahua
I made another trip for lunch to the Boeing Food Court on Hardeson. This time I checked out El Sabor de Chihuahua offering authentic Chihuahuan food. I’ll be honest and say that I can not tell the difference between food from different states of Mexico, but maybe it’s just that I haven’t eaten enough Mexican food. I’ll work on that.
I decided to try a torta or Mexican sandwich because I love sandwiches and good bread. There were many meat options including barbacoa, carnitas, carne asada and pollo verde. The ingredients were fresh, you can tell by the avocados which were perfect and the window for an avocado to be perfect is small.
I opted for barbacoa which was very tasty. In a new to me technique, they grilled cheese onto the bread by putting the cheese on the grill and placing the bread on top. Then they piled on the toppings of my choice which included refried beans, pico de gallo, tomatoes, lettuce, avocado sour cream, mild salsa and lime on the side. When I picked up my sandwich to cut it in half so I could eat it, I realized it was really heavy so I weighed it and it came out at 1.5 pounds! Also when I picked it up I noticed that the bread on the bottom was soggy. The flavors of the sandwich were solid but the bread ended up being a disappointment.
I went back the following week and told them about my experience. They suggested that the toppings I picked should have been put on the side for take-out. If eaten in-house, they wouldn’t have had time to soak through to the bread. This information came from the owner or manager I believe so I suspect it was a training issue.
I ordered another torta and I am so glad I did. I swapped out the barbacoa for carne asada. The extra moisture in stewed meats like barbacoa and carnitas can make the bread soggy too. Rather than going with pico de gallo, I had tomato, onions and cilantro with lime on the side for all the flavors of pico. The sandwich was excellent and now I’m going to have a hard time trying anything else because it was that good.
My son had the chicken flautas, which are rolled, fried tacos. They came with rice and a choice of beans - black, pinto or refried pinto. The flautas were filled densely with white chicken meat so they seemed a little on the dry side. We dipped them into the refried beans for a delicious combo. My son doesn’t like sour cream or salsa which would have added a lot to the dish.
El Sabor de Chihuahua has 4.4 rating on Google and I’ve heard good things about them. We are planning to go back to try some different options. The person behind me in line ordered a steak salad and that sounds delicious.
